For this weekend book review (better late than never!) I’ve chosen a book I used to take on holiday with me as a child. It even survived being dropped in the bath (thank goodness as I was only have way through at the time!) Many happy memories of this one
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – L. Frank Baum
It’s the familiar story and adventures of Dorothy from Kansas who gets swept away in a tornado along with her house and dog. It’s a bit darker than the film (the witch sends crows to try to peck eyes out, killer bees and wolves) and the slippers are silver not ruby. According to my sources (good old Wikipedia 😂) the colour was changed to ruby to make use of the new Technicolor process. I loved this book growing up. Such a good read! The age range is 8+.
Great Choice!! I used to read this book to my 3/4 grade students when I was teaching. They loved it– and then we’d watch the movie and note all the differences from the book. Fun to check in on our reviews! thanks!

And reading another blog I just found out there are 13 Oz books in the series. Didn’t realise! Definitely going to try the others!

Thanks! It makes a change from the pre-school books I read to my sons. Gives me ideas for their bookshelf in future 👍 xx
